Aromatherapy Massageuses the Essential Oils of plant material in a base oil as the massage medium.
Essential Oils are distilled from seeds, flowers, stems and leaves of many different plants and they have different therapeutic properties. A blend is individually made for each client at every session.
The oils reach the body in two main pathways. Through the nasal passages as an odour, they pass through the olfactory bulb and thence into the Limbic system, the root of emotions and the circulation. They are one of very few substances that can penetrate the blood brain barrier.
Essential oils have differing properties, for instance:-
German Chamomile, Matricaria recutita is antiseptic
Peppermint, Mentha piperita is analgesic
Ylang Ylang, Cananga odorata var. genuina is anti-depressant
Neroli, Citrus aurantium va. amara is antifungal
Sweet Marjoram, Origanum marjorana is a vasodilator
Lavender Lavandula angustifolia is sedative
Jasmine Jasminium grandifloram is a uterine tonic
These are just a small sampling. Each of the mentioned oils have several different properties and their effects are enhanced when used in a blend with other Essential Oils.
A clients existing medical conditions determine which oils may be used safely and also which oils are contra-indicated. Blends of oils can be used for the psychological benefits as well as the physical benefits. Our sense of smell is one of the most emotive senses we have, and odours evoke different responses depending on the events that are associated with them.
The other pathway that Essential Oils have is through the skin during massage. The lower back and the soles of the feet being the most absorbant surfaces. Although a massage may take approximately one hour, the oils will continue working for up to 8 hours afterwards.
Aromatherapy in Pregnancy and Labour
The sense of smell can be heightened during pregnancy so that Essential Oils, carefully chosen can help the mother cope with the discomforts of pregnancy such as nausea, dispepsia and constipation.
An Aromatherapy massage relieves stress and produces a sense of wellbeing and comfort. Positioning is important too, as in late pregnancy you may feel more comfotable sitting against a table and restng your head on your pillowed arms. A back massage is always welcome as backache is common throughout pregnancy.
There are essential Oils that can be chosen for heartburn, oedema and leg cramps.
After the birth oils with an uplifting quality can be chosen to provide a balacing atmosphere formother and newborn.
Thai Massage
This form of massage is based on Yoga positions for both the giver and receiver. It is slightly different from a "tradtional" or Swedish Body Massage in that it takes the muscle off the bone, rather than compressing the muscle against the bone. It has been called "Yoga for the Lazy".
The meridians of the body are followed using a rhythmic pressure to release any blockage. Starting at the feet and working up towards the head. The muscle is then moved away from the bone and the joints manipulated to allow the energy or Chi to move freely through joints and meridians.
You lie fully clothed on a futon mattress, the only thing to be removed as in Reflexology are shoes and socks.
You start lying on your back, during the massage you will be asked to turn onto your side then after a while onto the other side.
You will be asked to turn on your tummy and finally will be asked to lie on your back.
Turning over is the only effort you will be asked to make, any other movement will be done by your therapist.
Thai Massage provides you with a workout without you having to expend any energy!
It is excellent for flexibility and joint mobility. The body is only moved as far as it will go naturally. Golfers especially find this of great value as it helps with upper body mobility. M.E. and Fibromyalgia suferers also find it extremely useful in promoting body flexibility.
